Interim note on .mcpb: check the bundle before you trust it (#287). Its manifest.json launches ${__dirname}/bin/tactical-rmm-mcp, while the builder stores the release binaries in bin/ under their platform-suffixed names - tactical-rmm-mcp-darwin-arm64, -darwin-amd64, -linux-arm64, -linux-amd64, -windows-amd64.exe. Run unzip -l <file>.mcpb | grep bin/: if the name the manifest launches is not among them, Claude Desktop has nothing to run - use Path A or Path B below and wire Claude Desktop up through mcp-install.md.

The installer drops both tactical-rmm-cli (the CLI) and tactical-rmm-mcp (the MCP server) into your user bin path. Claude Code, Codex, and Cowork discover the Skill via SKILL.md in this directory.

Authenticate
Tactical RMM is self-hosted, so point the CLI at your instance and give it an API key from Settings > Global Settings > API Keys:

doctor confirms the base URL and credentials work before you run anything that touches data. It exits 0 even when the credential is rejected, so scripts should add --fail-on error.

What makes this different
Most Tactical RMM integrations and MCP servers proxy each question into a live API call. That's fine for one record. It dies at scale, when you're asking "how many of my 40 clients have machines pending a reboot tonight, across every site" and the answer would page through every endpoint on your server.
This skill syncs Tactical RMM into a local SQLite mirror with full-text search. Aggregate questions become one local SQL join: instant, offline, and the AI sees the answer, not the raw data. Compound commands like fleet health, triage, and clients scorecard join across agents, checks, alerts, and Windows-update state per client and site - work a stateless API wrapper can't do.
The pain this closes
Tactical RMM is the budget-friendly, self-hosted favorite on r/msp and in the MSPGeek community - you own the data and pay nothing per endpoint. The recurring gripe is reporting: the web UI shows you one agent or one client at a time, with no built-in fleet-wide view of health, patch posture, or "what changed overnight" across every client. Everything is in the API, but a cross-client rollup means scripting against it yourself - so the questions that matter at a Monday stand-up or a QBR go unanswered.

Frequently asked questions
Does this work with ChatGPT?
Yes, on Plus, Pro, Team, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans (Free tier does not yet expose Developer Mode). ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers over HTTPS, not local stdio binaries. The Tactical RMM MCP server runs locally, but it speaks HTTP natively: start it with tactical-rmm-mcp --transport http --addr :7777 and put it behind an HTTPS tunnel or your own reverse proxy. No bridge package is involved. Step-by-step in mcp-install.md.
Does this work with Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Copilot, or Gemini?
Yes - all of them speak MCP. Cross-tool install commands are in the matrix above and the deep-dive in docs/which-agent.md.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. The recommended install is to paste one sentence into Claude Code or Codex - your agent reads SKILL.md and does the install. The fallback is a one-line installer per OS (bash or PowerShell). Neither path requires writing code. You'll enter your Tactical RMM credentials once.
Is my Tactical RMM data safe?
Your data stays on your machine. The CLI and MCP server are local binaries. The SQLite mirror sits in a directory under your user account. The AI agent only sees what the CLI returns - typically a query result, not raw bulk data. Credentials are read from your environment or your agent's config; never bundled into this repo or transmitted anywhere by MSP Skills.
It's self-hosted - how does it find my server?
You point it at your own instance: set TACTICAL_RMM_BASE_URL to your Tactical RMM API URL (for example https://api.yourdomain.com) and TRMM_API_KEY to a key from Settings > Global Settings > API Keys. Both are set once; nothing is hard-coded to a vendor cloud.
Do I need to be a Tactical RMM customer or partner?
No. Tactical RMM is free and open source, and you self-host it. You only need an API key on your own instance; any Tactical RMM server with API access works.
Will this hit my server's rate limits?
Rarely. Most questions run against the local SQLite mirror after a one-time sync, so they make zero API calls. The few commands that fan out live (like services down or actions pending) are paced and capped with --max-scan-agents.
Will this replace my Tactical RMM web UI?
No - it complements it. The UI stays your system of record and remote-access console; this skill adds the cross-client query-and-automation layer it doesn't offer.
What does it cost?
Free. Apache-2.0 licensed. You pay only for whichever AI agent you use (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, etc.), and that's billed by your AI provider, not by us.
Safety model
Tactical RMM is a remote-control plane: beyond reading and editing config, it can run scripts on endpoints, reboot machines, install Windows updates, and manage credentials. The tiers below reflect that. The safe default for an autonomous agent is reads plus previewed writes; require a human for anything that runs on an endpoint, deletes, or touches credentials.

The strongest control is the scope you grant the Tactical RMM credentials - the CLI can only do what the credentials are permitted to do. Full details, including how to lock it down, are in governance.md.
